In his sixth interview with Nardwuar at the annual Camp Flog Gnaw Festival, Tyler, the Creator placed focus on musicians not discussing their music in interviews. During the nearly 30-minute interview, he addressed those who find his in-depth musical knowledge annoying, emphasizing the need to shift focus from gossip to meaningful music discussions. Tyler urged artists to talk about their albums, songs, and the creative efforts invested. The call out’s reference was speculated to be aimed at Complex’s Sneaker Shopping and Hot Ones shows, expressing a desire for interviews to center more on the artistry. 

Hours after the interview was aired, Tyler, The Creator took to social media to clarify his comments and apologize to Hot Ones host Sean Evans saying 

“In the interview, I shared a thought about the lack of journalism in the music/artist that seldomly speak about the music and only gossip etc and used ‘Hot Ones’ as one of the two examples, it comes off as having disdain towards the show which I don’t, but really it was to be used as a broader example that popped in my head while trying to make the point.”
