The Grammy Awards Announce They Will Drop The Term “Urban”

As part of their latest round of annual rules and changes, the Recording Academy has announced they will be ceasing the use of the term “Urban.” Although interim president/CEO. Harvey Mason Jr. says this decision was made a month ago, this announcement comes on the back of the recent initiative taken by Republic Records to also remove the term from being used. Oddly enough this is something Tyler, The Creator touched on at last years Grammy Awards after winning “Best Rap Album.” CEO Harvey Mason Jr. told variety

“It’s all part of what I hope will be a and a new chapter in our history. We’re listening to and learning from our partners and constituents and stakeholders; we’re trying to make sure we’re able to pivot and change and adapt; and we want to be really inclusive”

We expect many more to come forward soon and rid their companies of terms promoting marginalization. Check back soon for more.
