As the coronavirus continues to become more and more of a global pandemic overwhelming health care systems and digging financial holes for nations, the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday doubled down on its commitment hold the 2020 Games in Tokyo this summer, stunning athletes and other stakeholders who had been preparing for a postponement. Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, said the organization will remained focus on holding the Games in Tokyo in July.
“The I.O.C. remains fully committed to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and with more than four months to go before the Games there is no need for any drastic decisions at this stage, any speculation at this moment would be counterproductive. The I.O.C. encourages all athletes to continue to prepare for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as best they can.”
