Among a sweeping referendum of legislation passed last night, Virginia has become the 26th state to decriminalize marijuana. Under the new legislation, possession of small amounts of marijuana will no longer warrant jail time. Though the drug still remains illegal in Virginia, possession will now be treated like minor traffic violations. The bill sets the punishment of a $25 fine for having up to an ounce of the drug, whether it be plants, oils, or products deriving from it. The bill received bi partisan support among Virginia’s general assembly and is headed to Ralph Northam’s desk for signing.
