In what was set up to be arguably one of the toughest matches of Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones career against Dominick Reyes, Jones managed to defend his title after a hard fought 5 round bout. Through the first 3 rounds, Dominick landed more strikes than Jones and presented an overall dominance that Jones hadn’t seen in a very long time. The last two rounds the roles reversed as the defending champion displayed his courage and began chipping away at his opponent with strikes and take downs. Before the final announcement of the winner, the majority of fans in the Toyota Centre and around the world assumed either a draw or a narrow win for Jones, however as Bruce Buffer grabbed the mic and announced a Unanimous victory for Jones it immediately sent fight fans around the globe into a frenzy, even prompting Dana White, in a post-fight interview to acknowledge the dissenting scores, which were unavoidable given that he’s been hearing it from all sides since they were read. Dana simply said “The scoring was all over the map” specifically in reference to the lone 49-46 score submitted by judge Joe Solis, a verdict that seemed to ignore the success Reyes had putting the pressure on the champion early in the fight. Although Jones managed to defend his title for the 11th straight time, we are almost certain this win will prompt some judge/rule changes soon.
