Top Dawg Entertainment has undoubtably been one of the most notable labels in hip hop over the past decade. The label that launched the careers of household names like Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and SZA now seems to be losing the glue that most say kept the entire label together from the beginning, Dave Free. Although he moves quietly around the entertainment industry, his creativity and ability to command a powerful label has never been in question which makes many wonder why now ? why would Dave Free step down as president of Top Dawg when it seems SZA, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and Ab Soul all have either not reached the peak of their careers, are at the height of their careers or haven’t quite fell off that cliff of “notable artist.” Free told VIBE Magazine last year “the early years were just a lot of grinding, it took about eight years to figure out what not to do but honestly today things are a lot different because back in the blogging era we built relationships with the bloggers but now everything is about streaming that’s all that matters the direct relationship with streaming sites so none of the tactics we used back then would work now honestly.” Although earlier this year we heard rummers of Dave potentially leaving we don’t think anyone truly believed he would abandon the label he helped build. As expected Frank Ocean's PrEP+ delivered a turnout that had many raving and excited for the next event.
